Timeshare Las Vegas Vacation Ownership red week peak season Westgate Planet Hollywood

What to buy?

First the main question is really WHY to buy.  Granted many people have made money by renting out their timeshare.  And yes, many people have sold theirs for a profit.  But the main reason to buy a timeshare is:  YOU WANT TO GO ON VACATIONS!

You might be surprised how many people miss that simple point.  If you are never going to go on vacations then stop reading this, never buy a timeshare, and certainly never go on a timeshare presentation.  It won’t be worth your time.

If you are going to go on vacations or you want to start doing so at this point in your life, then read on!

There are two things to think of when it comes to what to buy.

1)     Will you vacation in the exact same location every year? (The vast minority would answer this question “no”)

2)     Will you vacation in the exact same week every year? (Again, most answer “No”)

So, if you are like most folks, you’ll need to EXCHANGE your weeks to go to other places at other times.  This allows you to take the week you own and use it in the Bahamas one year, Mexico the next year, Hawaii the year after that and Tennessee the year after that.  EXCHANGING is where most people go wrong in timeshare.  The simplest way to understand exchanging is to relate it to trading baseball cards or football cards.  If you have a card with the number one star player in his rookie season and the card is in mint condition, would you be able to trade for something better than a 3rd stringer card that’s beat up and torn?  OF COURSE!  So, when buying your weeks, keep that in mind.  Make sure you buy all the quality and tradability that you can afford.  Obviously the better you have, the better you can trade for.

What matters in EXCHANGING?  Four factors:

1)     The number of bedrooms your weeks have in them.

2)     The quality rating of your resort (based on a 5-star ratings system).

3)     The color season you own your weeks in (red weeks are in the highest demand)

4)     The demand of tourists wanting a room in the resort town.

And remember that you can very easily trade down to something lower.  Expect extreme difficulty into trying to trade to something better.  In fact, just plan on never getting anything better.  That will avoid disappointment.  If your family needs a 2 bedroom, don’t buy a 1 bedroom.  If you want 5 star resorts, don’t buy in a 3 star.  If you want the highest demand red weeks, don’t buy a green week or a blue week.  If you want to go to Hawaii, don’t buy in Peoria.  Just use common sense.
